If you’re considering enrolling on a Lean Six Sigma course in Australia, our team offers a simple and practical path, all while supporting you with the best resources and instructors. This guide walks you through every step of the certification journey, including selecting the right course to passing your final assessment.
Here’s how you can get certified, step-by-step:
Step 1: Choose Your Certification Level
Step 2: Enrol in the Appropriate Lean Six Sigma Course
Step 3: Complete Your Training Program
Step 4 Pass the Theory Certification Assessment Step
Step 5: Complete Your Real-World Project (Green and Black Belts)
Step 1: Choose Your Certification Level
To get started, you must first choose your Six Sigma certification levels. This depends on your experience in business process improvement and career goals.
Generally, there are three levels of certification, otherwise known as belts.
Yellow Belt Certification
The Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt certification is a foundational course for beginners and frontline staff who want to support small process improvements. This 2-day course, done virtually or in person, has no prerequisites or past work experience needed to get certified. Participants will have to complete a multiple-choice exam to get a Yellow Belt certification.
Green Belt
The Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification is an intermediate course for team leaders and mid-level professionals ready to lead improvement projects. This course is done within 4 days, and we recommend that participants have a minimum of 3 years of working experience and a good understanding of mathematics and basic statistics.
Black Belt
The Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification is an advanced course for senior managers and change leaders driving strategic transformation. Black Belt certificates teach participants how to design and execute an organisation’s overall Operational Excellence Strategy, as well as mentor other Yellow and Green Belt team members. Participants should have a minimum of 5 years of working experience.
In addition to a theory examination, Green Belt and Black Belt courses can also be completed through a project-based certification. This project allows them to apply their learning to solve real-world scenarios in their companies, and they must demonstrate cost savings to get the certification.
OE Partners offers certifications at all levels that apply to any industry. If you’re not sure where to start, our experienced trainers will guide you through a quick consultation to help determine the best fit.

Step Step 3: Complete Your Training Program
Now that you’ve enrolled, it's time to complete your training program. OE Partner’s training modules will focus on building your knowledge and giving you practical tools you can immediately apply.
Each program will focus on the different levels of Lean Six Sigma concepts and applications, with practical case studies and training materials that cater to your industry. Participants will receive a hard copy textbook along with pre-course work that must be completed before training. This will be sent out 10 business days before the start of your workshop.
The pre-course work will take anywhere between 1 and 8 hours to complete, depending on your certification level. Participants will then undergo the actual workshop, and this duration varies by belt:
- Yellow Belt: 2 day workshop
- Green Belt: 4-day workshop
- Black Belt: 12-day workshop
Once participants have completed the workshop, they must complete an assessment to get certified. Yellow Belts can complete a Theory Certification or final examination, while Green and Black Belts have the option to choose between a Theory Certification or Project Certification route to get certified in Lean Six Sigma.
Step 4: Pass the Theory Certification Assessment
Participants can choose to undergo a theory examination to get certified. This is a 40-minute, multiple-choice examination done in your company or our various facilities around Australia. The assessment is done to validate your understanding and ensure your ability to apply Lean Six Sigma principles.
Once you pass, you’ll receive a nationally recognised certificate from OE Partners and APMG International.
Step 5: Complete Your Real-World Project (Green and Black Belts)
For Green and Black Belts, project work is another additional certification option to get Lean Six Sigma certified. The Project Certification route allows participants to turn learning into measurable outcomes and demonstrates their ability to apply Lean Six Sigma in real world conditions.
OE Partners tailors projects to the actual workplace, allowing participants to deliver actual business improvements in their company. Green Belt project certification requires participants to demonstrate business savings or cost avoidance of at least $30,000 annually for the company. This figure is increased to at least $75,000 per year for Black Belt projects.
Here are the types of projects participants will be asked to complete in their business:
- Reducing order processing time
- Eliminating waste in production lines
- Streamlining onboarding processes
- Improving customer complaint resolution
During the project, participants will receive various support in their journey. This includes ongoing mentoring from our Master Black Belt trainers, a project template, and constant feedback and evaluation before final submission.
To provide further value, the resulting solution and Intellectual Property for all projects will be owned by the participants, allowing them to use it in their business independently.
Certification Timeline: How Long Does It Take?
The time to get certified varies depending on the belt and your availability. However, you can expect to complete the course in the following timelines:
- Yellow Belt: Between 1–2 weeks
- Green Belt: Between 2–3 weeks (more if including project certification)
- Black Belt: Between 3–4 months (more if also including project certification)
Participants undergoing a project are provided the support to progress at their own pace, ensuring that the course is not disruptive to their workload.
